Original Fabrics:
The Ford Mustang convertible top fabric (during these years) was originally pinpoint vinyl. Original colors were, most often: black, Ford white, and Ford blue. The original pale Ford blue fabric is no longer available.
Canvas tops:
Haartz Stayfast canvas is chosen by some "high-end" restorers. This is the most durable of domestic toppings. Canvas is the original topping on Mercedes, Porsche, many Cadillacs, some Chrysler Sebrings, etc. It has a canvas cloth outer layer, an inner pre-shrunk cotton layer and a central bonding core of butyl rubber.
Original top design:

Top Sections Available Separately:
The two top sections are available separately, for those who wish to keep either the existing window section or the existing main top. If you want a complete top without any accessories then order both sections (the main top and the rear window section.)
Do-It-Yourself Installation:
The blue link to two part top installation should allow you to make a decision about self installation. Many of our customers are first time self installers and have very successfully applied our installation manual (INST-MUSTANG.8390) to their installation. This is a fully illustrated step by step installation guide to 1983-1990 Mustang top installation.
If you can confidently use an air driven staple gun and align and glue with contact cement then you are a good candidate for DIY installation. There is no sewing involved.
Top Padding:
Under the top are long pad sections which build out the top. Padding can last through two tops.
Hold Down Cables:
One cable is threaded on each side of the main top through its cable pocket (along the inner edge of the top.) Cables are attached in the front and toward the rear at the top frame. We recommend new cables with each top installation.
Tack Strips:
Special tacking strips, embedded in the header and the rear top frame bows receive staples that fasten the top. Tack strips should last through two tops.
Top Boots:
We offer a top boot which attaches as originally designed. We strongly recommend the selection of a boot made of modern boot vinyl. This fabric has a subtle elasticity that makes it an ideal boot fabric..
Hydraulics:
We now stock hydraulic cylinders, motor-pumps, and hoses for your convertible tops. All are made to OEM specifications. Each can be ordered separately; however, when ordering hydraulic cylinders we recommend replacing both. The chances are that both cylinders were manufactured at the same time: if one is on its way out the other may follow. If the top is raised and one hydraulic cylinder is working harder than the other the result over time can lead to a slightly bent convertible top frame. The replacement of both will ensure that the top raises and lowers symmetrically.
Systems for this car take Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) and have a 5 year warranty when used with this fluid. Brake fluid should not be used as it voids the warranty. We also offer an installation manual when ordered.
The 12 volt motor-pumps include a mounting bracket with rubber grommets to reduce vibration. We also offer a rebuilding service for motor-pumps. Not all are repairable, but it is less expensive to have one rebuilt than to buy a new one. The motor-pump would need to be sent to us for evaluation. Hoses come with all new fittings and are made specifically to fit your car.
