The Arrow T50ACD electric staple gun drives wire staples with force. It will securely drive 1/4" and 3/8" staples into modern convertible top tack strips, eliminating the need for an air gun for convertible top installation. This stapler comes with the a supply of 1/4" and 3/8" staples.

Note for 73 and later convertibles: This booklet will be incomplete primarily at the front bow which was changed to steel instead of wood in 1973. However we feel that this booklet in conjunction with observations made during removal of the 73 and later convertible top is the best convertible top installation guide available.

Important Information

We carry premium convertible tops made by a specialist in German replacement tops and they have been installed in many prize winning Beetle restorations.

Beetle and Super Beetle top restoration will likely require other parts under the top. These include the headliner, top cables, wood top bows, etc. These top restoration items cannot be evaluated until the old convertible top is stripped off. Therefore, please browse through this site to read important information about top cables, wood top bows, convertible seals, etc.

Be especially aware of the importance of the right parts for the rear window repair or replacement which you will find at "Convertible Rear Window Parts." There is a restoration advice section on that page with very important information about the Beetle convertible rear window.

If you want to try to retain the old headliner and you have faith in the padding between the headliner and the top, then start with the top, the cables and the installation booklet and go from there. We will be happy to consult with Beetle and Super Beetle convertible owners to help determine needs and to configure a convertible top restoration package that is applicable.

About top fabrics: Haartz pinpoint vinyl is the choice of a majority of our customers.
It is a classic topping and was original to many classic American and foreign
convertibles. Canvas topping is the most durable and elegant. The butyl rubber
central core of this fabric helps make it both durable and flexible.
The vinyl topping might be more cost effective because of the large premium price for canvas toppings.

Can I install a top myself?
This restoration has been performed successfully by many of our customers, including first time installers, by self confident, patient persons. There is no sewing involved. There is alignment and contact cement work, and stapling or tacking to wood forms, and some pop rivet work (rivets can be changed to self tapping sheet metal screws.)

At the end of the job there is a "rope in" window installation which can be done at any automotive glass shop for less than an hour labor charge.

At the least, handy customers begin the job themselves: top removal and cleaning, painting, etc. Check out our "Literature" section for our "how to" booklets.

Wood bows can be installed by any handy owner. Do not use plastic (so called "wood replacement") bows!

Once the frame and wood are ready the upholstery begins. This is covered fairly thoroughly in both of our convertible top guides (see "Literature.") The $16 guide book is more detailed but covers some obsolete procedures, like the cutting of (no longer available) horsehair padding, and the fabrication of the rear window padding. Modern pad kits are made of foam rubber encased in fabric, and come pre-formed.

Besides our original replacement top, we also carry a non-original top which has a built in plastic rear window. Using this top will save much labor and parts cost because it is a "bare-bones" fix. But it does diminish the value of the finished vehicle. This top eliminates the headliner and the padding and does not require the rear glass window either.
