Convertible Top and Convertible Top Parts

These cars are called "scissor tops" because of the design of the top frame. Although this is a classic two part top whose installation is described in our two part manual (see link below), it has some special features. Therefore installers are urged to have the scissor top manual when installing. This is available within our complete restoration packages.

The original top, as well as our new tops, have a zipper sewn into the main top over the rear window. A matching zipper is part of the "curtain" (rear window section) at its top where the two top parts join.

Canvas and vinyl tops: vinyl (pinpoint grain) was original, and is somewhat easier to clean than canvas. Haartz stayfast canvas has a butyl rubber core which makes it very long lasting. In addition, the canvas outer layer is elegant. Haartz stayfast canvas is chosen by some restorers.

Hold down cables: cables thread through the hems on the inside of the top. They provide attachment and tension between the top and the folding frame. There are two types of hold down cables now on the market. The "universal" cables are popular because they are cheap. They have a plain attachment lug in place of the original gm plate. A restoration can be done with the universal cables. But the original gm plate grips the frame better and seats more flush to the frame. We recommend the original cables for all except budget installations.

Do it yourselfers: this is a classic two part top. The rear window section is joined under the main top with staples at the rear top bow. We cannot provide consultation on installation: you may purchase the guide to installing two part tops, below, to study the installation steps and make a decision, in advance of self-installation. We package the original shop manual on scissor top installation with our top restoration packages: this is a very detailed 35 page top installation manual written specifically for installing these scissor tops.

About boots: you may click on scans of our boot vinyls (see 'check out boot fabrics' below.) All boot vinyls are crush grain vinyls with a slight flexibility, that make them ideal boot material. You should select a color that comes closest to your interior. Black is available but not scanned. Please note that scanned fabrics are an approximation of the real swatch and that boots are custom made and therefore not returnable (except, of course, in the rare case of a warranty claim.)

There was a slight change in the top cables, tops and boots in 1972. We will provide the proper top or part: be certain to identify the year of your car in your checkout message box.

Hydraulics:

We now stock hydraulic cylinders, motor-pumps, and hoses for your convertible tops. All are made to OEM specifications. Each can be ordered separately; however, when ordering hydraulic cylinders we recommend replacing both. The chances are that both hydraulic cylinders were manufactured at the same time: if one is on its way out the other may follow. If the top is raised and one hydraulic cylinder is working harder than the other the result over time can lead to a slightly bent convertible top frame. The replacement of both hydraulic cylinders will ensure that the top raises and lowers symmetrically.

Systems for this car take Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) and have a 5 year warranty when used with this fluid. Brake fluid should not be used as it voids the warranty. We also offer an installation manual when ordered.

The 12 volt motor-pumps include a mounting bracket with rubber grommets to reduce vibration.

We also offer a rebuilding service for motor-pumps. Not all are repairable, but it is less expensive to have one rebuilt than to buy a new one. The motor-pump would need to be sent to us for evaluation. Hoses come with all new fittings and are made specifically to fit your car.
