Can I Install My Geo Metro Convertible Top?The Chevrolet Geo Metro top has a modular design, which makes it easier to install than most convertible tops. Our installation manual is an illustrated step-by-step set of instructions. There is neither stapling nor sewing involved. Installation requires removing existing hardware and then inserting its replacement, plus some contact cement work.
How do I choose my Geo Metro top?The Geo Metro convertible top fabric was a Japanese vinyl, very similar to our Haartz Pinpoint Vinyl. The Japanese vinyl is no longer available, but Haartz Pinpoint equals it in terms of quality and appearance. Our Geo Metro tops also fit the Suzuki Swifts, Cultus and Fireflies. We offer the Geo Metro convertible top in Haartz Pinpoint Vinyl and Stayfast Canvas. Here's what you need to know about each, before making a purchase:Haartz Pinpoint Vinyl: Haartz Pinpoint Vinyl is a two-ply composite with a PVC outer layer and a cotton inner lining. Haartz Pinpoint Vinyl is a popular convertible top fabric. The original Geo Metro convertible top was made of a now-extinct Japanese Vinyl that matches Haartz Pinpoint in terms of durability and appearance. In fact, this fabric is original to most American cars made before 1993. Pinpoint refers to the little dots on the vinyl surface. If you take care of a Haartz pinpoint vinyl convertible top, it can easily last 10 years. Luxurious Haartz Stayfast Canvas: If you're looking to upgrade your vinyl top, consider a convertible top made of Haartz Stayfast Canvas. This fabric is the American substitute for the German canvases used in Mercedes, Porsche, BMW, as well as some Mustang and Lebaron models. Haartz Stayfast Canvas is a three-ply composite material made of an acrylic square weave outer fabric, a butyl rubber core, and a cotton lining. The butyl rubber core promises to make Haartz Stayfast Canvas last a very long time. This canvas is a little richer looking than the vinyl. It's also a little harder to clean. Stayfast Canvas has both better static and dynamic wear ratings than vinyl tops. A small percentage of our customers request a canvas top for the Geo Metro. Due to the car's small body size and thus small top, canvas's durability is less important than it is on larger cars.
Zippered Window or Not?Though the original Geo Metro convertible top window came with a zippered window, today most Geo Metro tops come with a welded-in rear window. We recommend the Geo Metro top with a non-zippered, sealed-in window, because it is less expensive, more durable, and easier to install. However, if you would like a top with a zippered window, we can order one for you.Do I Need New Hold Down Cables?An important part of the Geo Metro convertible top installation is attaching the top to the frame via the pair of side cables. These cables, not visible after installation, were designed with an elastic spring to vary the tension in the top as it is raised and lowered. These cables almost surely require replacement with each new top.
