Volkswagen made changes to its convertibles in 1995. From that year onward the cars may be referred to as "Cabrios" or "Golf III". These Cabrio convertible tops used the same Cabrio vinyl as the earlier tops. Although similar to earlier "Cabriolet" tops, the geometry of the "Cabrio" top is changed.

Premium Tops:
The deck is wider and the front edge is stiffened with a plastic reinforcement. Germanex makes a dealer replacement top that features the heat sealed seams, the front plastic stiffener and all original detailing.

Basic Tops: For those restorers who want a fine Cabrio replacement top but at a lower price than the premium version, we offer the Basic Cabrio top. The basic top is made in the same Cabrio vinyl. The front is stiffened with doubled over fabric instead of the original plastic stiffener.

Original top installation procedure is followed in both our tops per Volkswagen's specifications: the glass rear window and hardware are retained from the old top and transferred into the new installation.

Plastic Window: Very budget minded restorers may want to consider our modified top which has a plastic rear window sewn into it. The top is intended primarily for restorers who have broken rear window frames or rotted rear window hardware and who do not wish to replace those. These tops are custom made to original geometry, but with the plastic rear window. They can therefore be installed without the original rear window framework and afterward the glass rear window is no longer part of the car.
