Scissor Top Convertible Tops and Convertible Top Parts
Full-size GM convertibles made between 1971 and 1976 are known as Scissor Tops. This includes the 1971-1976 Buick LeSabre, the 1971-1976 Buick Centurion, the 1971-1976 Cadillac Eldorado, the 1971-1976 Chevrolet Impala and Caprice, the 1971-1976 Oldsmobile Delta 88, 98, and Royale, and the 1971-76 Pontiac Catalina and Granville.
These Scissor Tops are classic two-part tops, meaning the rear window section must be integrated into the top during installation. The term "scissor top" refers to the unusual way this particular two-part top folds, compared with other two-part tops. Original scissor tops came in Haartz Pinpoint Vinyl, in black and GM white. Today we offer them as original, but in more colors, and also in Haartz Stayfast canvas, which is slightly more durable and elegant.
If you're comfortable working with an air-driven staple gun, and a little contact cement, then we believe you can install your own scissor top and save hundreds of dollars on labor costs. (There is no sewing involved.) Our money-savings convertible top packages include everything you need to install your own top--cables, staples, webbing, tacking strips, and our own step-by-step scissor top installation manual. You can purchase the scissor top manual in advance of a top package purchase. We would apply its cost to future purchase of a scissor top package. Read the scissor top manual through before deciding on do-it-yourself restoration.

Choosing a Scissor Top Convertible Top Fabric:
Haartz Pinpoint Vinyl:
Haartz Pinpoint Vinyl is a two-ply composite with a PVC outer layer and a cotton inner lining. Haartz Pinpoint Vinyl is a popular convertible top fabric. Original scissor top convertible tops were made of Haartz Pinpoint Vinyl. In fact, this fabric is original to most American cars made before 1993. Pinpoint refers to the little dots on the vinyl surface. If you take care of a Haartz Pinpoint Vinyl convertible top, it can easily last 10 years.
Haartz Stayfast Canvas:
If you're looking to upgrade your vinyl top, consider a convertible top made of Haartz Stayfast Canvas. This fabric is the American substitute for the German canvases used in Mercedes, Porsche, BMW, as well as some Mustang and Lebaron models. Haartz Stayfast Canvas is a three-ply composite material made of an acrylic square-weave outer fabric, a butyl rubber core, and a cotton lining. The butyl rubber core promises to make Haartz Stayfast Canvas last a very long time. This canvas is a little richer looking than the vinyl. It's also a little harder to clean. Stayfast Canvas has both better static and dynamic wear ratings than vinyl tops.
Can I install a scissor top myself?
GM Scissor Tops require a classic two-part convertible top, meaning there's a main top section and a rear window section, called the "curtain." The two convertible-top sections are integrated during the installation process.
For your convenience, we sell the two parts to this top together and separately. Looking for a great deal? Check out our Best Buy Convertible Top Packages.
To help you install your own scissor convertible top, we offer a profusely illustrated convertible top manual, now in its fourth edition. In particular, the manual applies to those full-size GM convertibles, including the 1971-1976 Buick LeSabre, the 1971-1976 Buick Centurion, the 1971-1976 Cadillac Eldorado, the 1971-1976 Chevrolet Impala and Caprice, the 1971-1976 Oldsmobile Delta 88, 98, and Royale, and the 1971-76 Pontiac Catalina and Granville. The original scissor top manual is profusely illustrated and has been used by many scissor top owners in do-it-yourself scissor top restoration work. However the frame does make it somewhat more difficult to install this top than the typical two-part convertible top. You can purchase the scissor top manual in advance of a top package purchase. We would apply its cost to future purchase of a scissor top package. Read the scissor top manual through before deciding on do-it-yourself restoration.
